Fire ties Red Bulls, 1-1, in pre-season match | Soccer By Ives

By FRANCO PANIZO

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Marco Pappa may have started the Chicago Fires friendly against the New York Red Bulls on the bench, but he surely gave head coach Carlos de los Cobossomething to think about with his second-half performance.

Entering at halftime in a game that was going New Yorks way, Pappa helped Chicago regain some possession as well as erase a 1-0 deficit. Pappa was a penalty kick away from potentially giving the Fire a victory, but his shot was saved by Bouna Coundoul, leaving the match at Lockhart Stadium to end 1-1 on a sunny Wednesday afternoon.

The miss didnt matter, though. Pappas performance made a statement nonetheless.

Huge player. Pappa is an all-star player, hands down.Ive said it from day one, said Fire defender Cory Gibbs, who is a Ft. Lauderdale native and nearly scored off a header late in the game. Hes dealt with his fitness and getting back and his injuries and hands down one of our top players to be out there. Hes a key part of our team and I think he showed exceptionally well today.

Trailing 1-0 to the Red Bulls after a shot by Joel Lindpere from 21 yards out crept inside the far post, Pappa entered the game for the Fire, and helped rejuvenize a team that had trouble stringing together more than two passes in the first half.

Pappa pulled Chicago level in the 59th minute when Patrick Nyarko, who was playing somewhat of a right wingback role, crossed a perfect ball to him. Unmarked, Pappa took a touch before cooly finishing.

Nyarkos assist was well-deserved as the Ghanaian caused havoc for the Red Bulls on the right flank. While his touch let him down on a couple of occasions, including on a first half chance that could have seen him through on goal, Nyarko was one of the most active Fire players on the field. He got forward well and caused problems for Roy Miller with his dribbling and quickness, and he also provided some defensive bite, especially during moments in the first half when the rest of Chicagos midfield looked lifeless.

Nyarko may have to continue to contribute more defensively if de los Cobos sticks to playing with the three-man backline that at times morphs into a four or five-man defense.

Thats just the tactics that we discussed before the game, said Sean Johnson. I think we stuck to it and it worked well for us. Were trying out somethings to see what works for us and I think well be good for the start of the season.

Johnson and Chicagos defense did allow a goal, but even that came on a pinpoint shot from distance from Lindpere, who had a stout performance. Other than that, Chicagos new defense frustrated the Red Bulls, who lacked creativity in the final third despite dominating most of the possession in the opening 45 minutes.

There were multiple signs that showed just how frustrated Red Bulls players were. From a needless shove-from-behind foul from Juan Agudelo to Thierry Henrys penchant to drop back into the midfield to try to inject himself into the game, the Fires defense did enough to relatively stymie one of the most talented attacks in MLS.

We couldnt really break them down but it was (nice) to play a team that defends well and perhaps well see that a lot anyhow when we play at home said Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe.

Backe might be grateful that his team met a stingy defense in the preseason, but hes likely even more pleased with the way his team moved the ball against Chicago.

From Tim Ream and Rafael Marquez in defense, to midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy, to substitute Dane Richards, nearly all of New Yorks players looked technically sound in the 1-1 draw. Chicagos defense with the likes of Gibbs, Josip Mikulic and rookie Jalil Anibaba may have been tough to crack, but so too was the rhythm of New Yorks passing.

I thought we played well for the first 70 minutes and then fatigue set in. Obviously, youve got to just keep building on your fitness base, said Ream, who played 90 minutes. Other than that, I thought we moved the ball well again and hopefully we continue to do that.

Sidenote: Before the Red Bulls and Fires first teams played to a 1-1 draw, the teams reserves squared off in the morning. Three penalty kicks were awarded in a match that saw Chicago prevail, 4-2. All of Chicagos goals came from Orr Barouch, who enjoyed a splendid game, so much so that U.S. U-20 national team coach Thomas Rongen wanted to speak to Barouch following the match to get an update on his green card status. New Yorks goals came off a picture-perfect free kick from rookie John Rooney and a penalty kick from Corey Hertzog.

MLS Ticker: N.E., Portland post clean sheets; Quakes keep rolling in England | Soccer By Ives

After giving up the most goals in Major League Soccer a year ago, the New England Revolution is off to a nice start in its attempt to rectify its defensive problems.

The Revolution posted its third consecutive clean sheet on its trip in Florida, blanking FC Dallas, 1-0, on Wednesday behind a 10th-minute goal from Sainey Nyassi.

After 2-0 victories over the University of Central Florida and members of the United States Under-17 team not taking part in the CONCACAF U-17 championships, the Revolution turned its attention to a professional side and produced a similar result.

The defensive unit comprised of Didier Domi, Ryan Cochrane, A.J. Soares and Zak Boggs went the full 90 minutes in front of Matt Reis, who made four saves in goal.

Here are a couple of more preseason results from around MLS:

PORTLAND TOPS MONTREAL

The Portland Timbers received a seventh-minute goal from Eddie Johnson, and Adin Brown posted a clean sheet in goal to lift the expansion side to a 1-0 victory over NASLs Montreal Impact in Casa Grande, Ariz.

Johnson, starting up top aside trialist Jorge Perlaza, latched onto a cross from another trialist, Roberto Merino, and headed home the eventual game-winner from short range.

SAN JOSE TOPS COLCHESTER

The San Jose Earthquakes won again during their stay in England, topping England League One side Colchester United, 3-0, in a game filled with reserves.

Ellis McLoughlin produced a brace, and Matt Luzunaris tallied the final goal to bring San Joses record on its England trip to 2-0.

The Earthquakes topped Birmingham Citys reserves which included U.S. international midfielder Alejandro Bedoya on Tuesday, 4-0, behind two goals from Steven Lenhart and tallies from Joey Gjertsen and Chris Wondolowski.

What do you make of Wednesdays other results? Think New Englands defense will be better in 2011? Do you see Johnson playing a big part for the Timbers this season? Expect San Jose to be a threat in the West?

UEFA Europa League: Your Running Commentary | Soccer By Ives

One team with an American in the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 is in good shape, one is teetering in the balance and one needs somewhat of a miracle heading into Thursdays second-leg matches.

Oguchi Onyewu and FC Twente host Rubin Kazan after scoring a 2-0 victory in their first meeting in Russia and look to be a solid bet to advance to the final 16.

Maurice Edu and Rangers yielded a late away goal to Sporting Lisbon in their first-leg match in Glasgow, and they have their work cut out for them in the return leg in Portugal.

Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht, meanwhile, dropped a 3-0 result at home to Ajax Amsterdam and need somewhat of a miracle to maintain their hopes of winning European silverware this season.

Grella loaned to Swindon Town | Soccer By Ives

Mike Grellas latest loan stop will be back in Englands League One.

Grella was sent to Swindon Town on an emergency loan for the remainder of the season from Leeds United, where he has been buried on the depth chart.

The 24-year-old American forward was loaned to League One side Carlisle United earlier in the season and scored three goals in 11 matches before his loan expired. He had a deal in place to be sent to Motherwell in Scotland soon after that, but a ruling from the Scottish FA prohibited the move from taking place, because he had already played for two teams in England this season (he had one appearance early on for Leeds).

Reports from England suggest that hell start immediately for the Robins, who sit just a point clear of the relegation zone and face fifth-place Southampton this weekend.

What do you think about the move?

Edu scores late goal, puts Rangers through to UEFA Europa League final 16 | Soccer By Ives

With time ticking down in Rangers UEFA Europa League campaign, United States international midfielder Maurice Edu delivered.

In second-half stoppage time, Edu ran onto a cross from the right, slid and tapped home the goal that sent Rangers past Sporting Lisbon and into the Europa League final 16. Sporting had gone ahead 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate) just minutes earlier with an 83rd-minute tally, but Edus goal leveled the score and gave Rangers the edge on away goals.

Rangers will face PSV Eindhoven in the next knockout stage.

Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead | Soccer By Ives

By FRANCO PANIZO

From Eredivisie games to Europa League fixtures, Oguchi Onyewu has played in several matches of high magnitude since joining FC Twente on loan.

That will once again be the case this weekend.

Onyewu and second-place Twente will attempt to claim the top spot in the Dutch League when it takes on AZ Alkmaar on Sunday. A win for Twente combined with a PSV Eindhoven loss to third-place Ajax wouldsee the Tukkers atop the table with two months left to play. Onyewu is expected to make his fifth leage start in the game.

American fans will also want to keep tabs on a possible Michael Bradley-Jermaine Jones duel as Blackburn visits Aston Villa. Having made his Premiership debut nearly two weeks ago, Bradley will hope to replace the suspended Jean Makoun in Villas starting lineup while Jones is all but certain to get the nod for the Rovers.

Another intriguing battle on tap will be when Edson Buddle and FC Ingolstadt 04 look to go on the road and defeat Luis Robles and Karlsruhe. Buddle could score his second goal of the season against Robles in a Bundesliga 2 match that holds relegation implications.

MLS Ticker: Texas derby set for Disney final, Seattle smokes UCF and more | Soccer By Ives

By AVI CREDITOR

The final of the Disney Classic will be an old-fashioned Texas derby.

FC Dallas outlasted Orlando City S.C., and the Houston Dynamo topped Toronto FC in Thursday nights semifinals at Disney World to set up a rematch of last years third-place game in this years final.

Dallas Milton Rodriguez touched home a Brek Shea header at the goalmouth in the 30th minute for the only tally in FCDs 1-0 victory over the USL-PRO side.

Houston battled back from a 2-1 deficit to take the nightcap, 3-2. Cam Weaver scored the match-winner in the 68th minute after Brad Davis had knotted the score at 2-all just before halftime. Geoff Cameron scored the Dynamos other goal, while Jacob Peterson and Dwayne De Rosario tallied for TFC, which put Aron Winters 4-3-3 formation on display.

The two Texas teams, who recently played through a chippy preseason affair, will play in the final on Saturday night (8 p.m.). Toronto and Orlando City will meet in the third-place match at 6 p.m. Both games will be aired on ESPN3.com.

Here are a few more stories from around the league:

SOUNDERS ROUT UCF

The Seattle Sounders did something that a couple of other MLS teams could not do. They blew out the University of Central Florida.

After playing the Philadelphia Union and New England Revolution in relatively competitive matches, the Knights were no match for the Sounders, who overwhelmed them with a 7-0 result in their friendly on Thursday.

OBrian White and Pat Noonan each scored twice, David Estrada and Michael Fucito tallied goals and a Lamar Neagle cross was put into the net for an own goal to account for the scoring.

WARZYCHA, EDWARD OUT FOR LONG TERM

Sporting Kansas City rookie Konrad Warzycha and FC Dallas defender Edson Edward are both expected to miss the next 6-9 months with severe knee injuries.

Warzycha, a rookie out of Ohio State and the son of Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha, has been diagnosed with a femoral condyle defect in his right knee that requires surgery.

Edward underwent surgery earlier this week for torn knee ligaments (ACL, LCL). He was injured during a training session earlier this month.

QUAKES DROP ENGLAND FINALE

The San Jose Earthquakes wrapped up their trip to England with a 3-1 loss to Leicester City on Thursday.

Chris Wondolowski scored the goal for San Jose, which saw Tim Ward and Ramiro Corrales exit with injuries that the team deemed to be not serious.

Leicester City, which plays in Englands League Championship, fielded a team comprised with some first-teamers and some reserves.

What did you think of the matches in the Disney Classic? Do you see Noonan and White balancing out the Sounders attack this season? Think Wondolowski will come close to his goal total from a year ago?
