U.S. U-17s defeat El Salvador, clinch place in 2011 FIFA World Cup | Soccer By Ives

Mario Rodriguez and Marc Pelosi scored goals in extra time to propel the United States Under-17 national team to a wild 3-2 victory over El Salvador in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF U-17 championships. The victory booked a place in the semifinals of the tournament and clinched a berth in the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico for coach Wilmer Cabreras squad.

In the 96th minute, Rodriguez finished off an unselfish pass from Pelosi, who had gotten in on goal from the left on a counterattack but elected to slot a ball across the center of the area. Rodriguez ran onto the pass and finished into a vacated net to put the United States ahead.

Pelosi added the eventual game-winner by touching home a cross from Alejandro Guido in the 112th minute before chaos ensued.

After U.S. defender Kellyn Acosta was sent off for picking up his second yellow card, El Salvador forward Jose Pena and U.S. goalkeeper Fernando Pina were involved in an altercation that got both players sent off with straight red cards.

Pina was given a red for kicking an El Salvador player in the box while trying to make a play on the ball in the air, and Pena retaliated by getting physical with Pina.

Backup keeper Kendall McIntosh was pressed into duty and promptly yielded the ensuing penalty to Geraldo Iraheta, which got El Salvador back within one goal, but the United States held on with nine men to advance.

Guido got the United States off to a strong start with a goal off a header in the fifth minute, but the lead was short lived. Pena equalized for El Salvador four minutes later, and the teams played through the 1-1 scoreline until extra time.

Acosta and Pina should not be available for the United States semifinal match against either Jamaica or Honduras, who will face each other in a quarterfinal on Wednesday. Panama, which qualified for the U-17 World Cup for the first time after defeating Costa Rica earlier in the day, will face either Canada or Trinidad and Tobago in the other semifinal.

What do you think about the result? Relieved the United States qualified? Think the USA can win the CONCACAF title?

CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals: Your Running Commentary | Soccer By Ives

One of two Major League Soccer teams is guaranteed a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals, and the first step to finding out which team that will be takes place tonight in Columbus when the Crew hosts Real Salt Lake (8 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel/Galavision) in the first leg of their quarterfinal matchup.

The Crew hardly resembles the team that got through the group stage, with a bevy of key players from its 2010 squad no longer on the roster. Real Salt Lake, on the other hand, will try to steal a result on the road with a veteran, cohesive group that has had plenty of success over the last two seasons.

In the nights other quarterfinal first leg, Cruz Azul hosts Santos Laguna, which just fired its coach this week, in one of two all-Mexican quarterfinals (10 p.m., Telefutura).

If you will be watching either match or both please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action.

Real Madrid held to draw at Lyon, Chelsea rolls in UEFA Champions League | Soccer By Ives

By JOHN BOSCHINI

Real Madrid is in the drivers seat but still faces a dicey return leg if it is to advance to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in seven years after being held to a 1-1 draw by host Lyon. Former Lyon striker Karim Benzema gave Madrid the lead and a crucial away goal before Bafetimbi Gomis equalized late in the second half for the French side.

Early chances were limited to set pieces and long-range shots before Gomis missed a golden chance for Lyon in the 35th minute. Madrid keeper Iker Casillas failed to hold a cross and Gomis couldnt convert the ensuing, close-range rebound.

Madrid reasserted itself early in the second half with Cristiano Ronaldos free kick and a Sergio Ramos header striking the woodwork in the first few minutes.

Jose Mourinho introduced Benzema shortly after and the striker was on the field less than 60 seconds before giving Madrid the lead in the 65th minute. Mesut Ozil shook off about three Lyon defenders before laying it off to Ronaldo, who slipped a pass through to Benzema. The Frenchman made no mistake from about 10 yards out to take his Champions League goal tally to five.

Madrid was poised to take a one-goal advantage back to the Bernabeu, but Gomis equalized with seven minutes to go. A Lyon free kick was deflected high, and Cris headed down to Gomis, who slotted his shot past Casillas from five yards out.

The two teams meet again on March 16, and Real Madrid will have to try and advance to the quarterfinals at the expense of a Lyon side that dumped it out of the competition at this stage last year. Here are highlights from the match:

CHELSEA 2, FC COPENHAGEN 0

In Denmark, Chelsea put itself in a dominant position over FC Copenhagen with a 2-0 away victory in the two teams Round-of-16 clash. Nicolas Anelka bagged a brace as the Blues took a step in reversing their rapidly declining fortunes.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti caused drama before the game when Didier Drogba was left on the bench in favor of new-signing Fernando Torres and Anelka. But Ancelottis lineup was vindicated just 17 minutes into the match, when Anelka capitalized on a defensive error from Lyon. Former Chelsea player Jesper Gronkjaers back pass was intercepted by Anelka, who rifled a low shot into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area.

Copenhagen never mounted much of an offensive attack, and the tie was put beyond much doubt seven minutes after the halftime restart when Frank Lampard found Anelka to the right of goal, and the French strikers shot cut across keeper Johan Wiland and into the goal.

Torres failed to score yet again but a couple of promising chances and 90 minutes on the field should give Chelsea some hope for its record signing. At the same time, Ancelotti must worry about his former No. 1 striker, Drogba, who reportedly refused to warm up with the other substitutes after being left out of the starting lineup.

The two teams meet again on March 16 at Stamford Bridge. Here are highlights from the match:

What did you think of Tuesdays games? Confident Real Madrid can hold serve at home and advance? Or do you see Lyon shocking the La Liga giants for a second consecutive season? Impressed with Chelseas performance? Do you think Copenhagen has a chance?

Wednesday Kickoff: 3 reds, 0 goals and a CCL draw between Columbus and RSL | Soccer By Ives

While nobody will mistake Tuesday nights CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg between the Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake as an instant classic, there were plenty of talking points to come out of the 0-0 draw at Crew Stadium.

Referee Jair Marrufo issued three red cards, with RSLs Tony Beltran (two yellows) and Nat Borchers and Columbus Emilio Renteria all being sent off and becoming ineligible for the return leg March 1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Columbus had more opportunities in the attacking third, with Renteria and Andres Mendoza linking up together to create chances, all of which were either off target or saved by Nick Rimando. RSL, meanwhile, didnt challenge third-string goalkeeper Ray Burse once, but did well to keep the tie even despite being down a man for the final 37 minutes of the game.

Highlights from the match are after the jump:

What did you think of the match? Do you think all the cards were deserved? Were you impressed with the Crews attack? Dissapointed with RSLs? Do you see RSL or Columbus winning the second leg and advancing?

Your February Questions Answered (Part 1) | Soccer By Ives

The U.S. national team didnt play this month due to the canceled friendly vs. Egypt, but the team remains the most popular topic among American fans eager to see where the team goes in 2011.

The first installment of Your February Questions Answered has a handful of U.S. national team questions, along with some MLS inquiries. I also touch on the Gold Cup, the Chicago Fire and MLS in general.

Lets get started. Here are the first of Your February Questions Answered:

A.S.- Is Bob Bradleys move to a 4-2-3-1 a year too late? I mean, wasnt it obvious in November 2009 when Davies got hurt that the US should switch away from a 2-forward formation, given that there were no longer 2 World Cup class forwards in the player pool? I am happy Bradley has (finally) made the switch, but I regret that he only did so after the WC. Seems to me to be a missed opportunity.

IVES- No, not really. It wasnt obvious that the U.S. should switch, but I would agree that it should have been worked into the arsenal. Simple fact is that at that time, and for most of the run-up to 2010, the midfield pool wasnt as strong as it is now. Now, if Stuart Holden hadnt been hurt last March and would have had the chance to develop at Bolton, and be fully fit and sharp heading into the World Cup, perhaps Bradley could have considered the contingency.

I would say that Bradley could have tried it out some, and included it as an option, but there just wasnt a player who fit the attacking midfield/withdrawn forward spot in a 4-2-3-1. Holdens injury pretty much ended that possibility. Yes, he was recovered from the broken leg by the World Cup, but hadnt been back long and wasnt nearly as sharp as he is right now.

Nows a good time to move toward the 4-2-3-1 because of the progress of a player like Holden, as well as the potential of players like Alejandro Bedoya and Mikkel Diskerud.

NEUMANNATOR- Is PPL Park too small to host an all-star game or MLS Cup championship?

IVES- I wouldnt say too small. Having a sold-out MLS Cup Final is never a bad thing, and ultimately you want people to watch it on TV so the attendance figure isnt as important as the presentation of the event.

COOKIE MONSTER-Who do you think will be the darkhorse teams at this years gold cup? Panama? Guadeloupe again?

IVES- My money is on Jamaica being a real force in this years tournment.

RAMBO- Your thoughts on who Najar will choose? You knew this question was coming

IVES- Id bet on Honduras, but you have to wonder what factor his teammates at D.C. United will play. With guys like Charlie Davies and Perry Kitchen there, I could see him being influenced more heavily. Id still say Honduras.

FELIX- Where do you rate The Wire in the pantheon of great TV crime dramas?

IVES- Best crime drama ever, best TV show ever.

STEPHEN- In your tweets regarding Charlie Davies and DC United, you mentioned that MLS has a rule that loan deals must include an option to buy. Why does MLS have such a ridiculous requirement? Doesnt it prevent big clubs from loaning quality prospects to MLS clubs?

IVES- Its pretty simple. MLS believes in continuity and doesnt want a situation where teams are bringing in short-term mercenaries to come through the league without really establishing themselves in the league. If you have players popping in for short loans and leaving right away, even though theyve done very well, that takes away from the continuity of the league. I dont personally agree, but thats what Ive been told in the past. Whether it remains a hard and fast rule remains to be seen, but as it stands I cant think of a situation where a team has NOT had a purchase option.

BRIAN- Who is the player you have the most respect for in the game today? manager? writer?

IVES- Player I respect? Ill go with Ryan Giggs. Manager? David Moyes. Writer? Grant Wahl.

KLAUS- Does Mo Edu need to move away from Rangers to a more competitive league in order boast his chances for starters minutes for the USNMNT?

IVES- He needs to move away from Rangers to a bigger league because hes good enough to go to a bigger league. Where hes playing isnt whats keeping him from getting more minutes for the national team.

MIKE CARAMBA- If you won the lottery, would you work as many hours as you do now, or would scale things back? Take on any new ventures? Thanks!

IVES- I would obviously work fewer hours, but Id seriously invest in SBI and try to make it the site I always dreamed it could be. Now, if were talking a nine-figure lottery haul Id have to think about investing in an MLS team.

A-LOTT- Im taking bets on how long Carlos De Los Cobos lasts in Chicago this season and Ive set the over/under at July. What are you taking?

IVES- Preki is Chicagos head coach by June.

BECKSTER- I know you thought Convey did enough to get called to January camp, yet he wasnt. What does he need to do to get a call up to Gold Cup or is he just not going to be on the Nats as long as Bradley is in charge?

IVES- If he keeps up his 2010 form through the first half of 2011, and still doesnt even get a sniff, then its something Bob Bradley has to address publicly and specifically because there is no denying Convey looked like one of the best American left-sided players in the pool yet got no looks. Ill buy the January exclusion since it was young players mostly, but if Convey keeps playing well and keeps getting passed over then it becomes an unavoidable subject.

Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary | Soccer By Ives

The two clubs from last years UEFA Champions League final are set to do battle three rounds earlier in 2011, as Bayern Munich and Inter Milan square off in the first leg of their round-of-16 knockout tie in Italy.

In the days other UCL match, upstart Marseille will look to take advantage of a somewhat weakened Manchester United side (no Rio Ferdinand or Ryan Giggs) in the home leg of their tie.

Arsenal was already victorious in its first knockout match, but it faces a league test on Wednesday, welcoming Stoke City to the Emirates.

Heres the TV schedule for the days matches:

2:45 p.m. Fox Soccer Channel/Fox Deportes Marseille vs. Manchester United

2:45 p.m. Fox Soccer Plus/FoxSoccer.tv Inter Milan vs. Bayern Munich

2:45 p.m. FoxSoccer.tv Arsenal vs. Stoke City

3 p.m. CONCACAF.com – Jamaica vs. Honduras (CONCACAF U-17 championships quarterfinal, winner faces USA in semifinals)

MLS releases new playoff format | Soccer By Ives

Major League Soccer has released its new playoff format, which includes 10 teams and a minimum of three from each conference.

The top three teams in each conference automatically qualify, and the top four teams after that regardless of conference affiliation qualify as wildcards.

The four wildcards play a single-elimination playoff round to narrow the field to eight, with the lowest remaining seed playing the Supporters Shield winner, and second-lowest playing the other conference winner. The format remains the same as past years after that point, with two-legged, aggregate conference semifinals followed by a single-match conference championship.

The conference championship games are guaranteed to be hosted by teams actually in their respective conferences, avoiding a scenario like last season when Colorado and San Jose played for the Eastern Conference title; however, an Eastern Conference championship can still be won by a team in the Western Conference, and vice versa.

What do you think of the new format?

Gomez wins it late for Munich; United, Marseille draw in Champions League | Soccer By Ives

By JOHN BOSCHINI

It was a low-scoring afternoon in the UEFA Champions League, with a 90th-minute score from Mario Gomez acting as the only goal in Bayern Munichs 1-0 victory over Inter Milan. In the days other match, Manchester United and Marseille battled to a scoreless draw in France.

The 1-0 defeat was the second in as many weeks for an Italian side in Champions League play at the San Siro, as defending champion Inter failed to hold serve against Bayern Munich in a rematch of last seasons final. Inter looked likely to escape its home ground with a draw, but Gomez capitalized on a rebound of an Arjen Robben shot just before full time to give the Germans a lead and a massive away goal heading into the return leg.

The first half was end-to-end with Bayerns closest chance coming when Franck Riberys header hit the crossbar in the 25th minute. The two teams meet again on March 15 in Munich.

The match highlights are after the jump:

MARSEILLE 0, MANCHESTER UNITED 0

Manchester United failed to get an away goal but remains in a decent position heading back to Old Trafford after a scoreless draw withMarseille.

The first half was relatively void of chances.Marseilles best opportunity came when United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar misjudged a corner kick and the ball nearly crossed the line without being touched by another player. But the Dutchman scrambled back in time to keep the match scoreless after 45 minutes.

Uniteds attack didnt click until surprise lineup inclusion Darron Gibson was taken off in favor of Paul Scholes. But it was too little, too late, as the best United chance came when Dimitar Berbatov rifled a shot over the crossbar. The two teams meet again on March 15 in Manchester. Here are highlights from the match:
